COUNTRYSIDE CLASS
The Library Project
Situation now
The
beginning of 2014 we finally got 5 different English classes at the week, one
Khmer traditional dance class at the weekend and one small library with two
books shelves that have more than 500 different books (story books, work books,
dictionaries, etc - almost 50 percent of the books are story books). We now
have 3 English teachers and one dance teacher. There are almost 150 students
and from different ages, 5 to 18 years old. Every year we get more and more
students faster than what we expected. Thankfully, each year we’ve been able to
find more support in our community and from others to help us build up our
school and greatly improve our students’ success. Even when we have some
problems affecting our work and progress, we still keep going with slow and
steady progress, finding a solution step by step together.
We have had many plans for extra projects since
the founding of our school in order to support this school’s progress and help
our students to improve themselves more quickly and easily. Many of these extra
projects, such as an environment project to address pollution in our community,
require more knowledge and understanding than our students currently have. So our
first step is creating a library project so that they can learn about these
other subjects as well as continue to improve their English. But the library we
have now isn’t sufficient; we don’t have enough books or a budget to pay for a
librarian to support programs like movies, Story Telling Corner, and reading
competitions.
30 of our students participated in a community clean up as part of an environmental awareness campaign over Khmer New Year in April 2014. |
So
we need help from you all to help fund improving our library to create useful
programs and support our students.

The Plan
This is the plan we have for our new library:
We need one salary for a librarian for one year in advance,
one projector for the movie plan, a computer for keep documentary of the school
and the movies; two books shelves and 500 different books, one
printer, paper
and the prize…
The
librarian
-
Works 20 hours per week
-
Start open the library from 9am to 11am in the morning
and start again from 1pm to 3pm
-
The librarian need to look after the books
inside the library, organize the books, register students who read the books, operate
the reading competition program, reporting the library document, responding
with progress of the library…
The movie
plan
-
We would like to change some way of study for
students not only to read so they also can watch and see the real too
-
There are a few kinds of movies that we choose:
cartoon, history, documentary, environment, stories, movie from the books…
-
For this movie all the students and the
community people can watch it
-
And they can watch it three to four time a week
-
The librarian will manage this project
The books
-
We need story books and some documentary books
because our students’ reading level and also philosophy books to improve their
way of reading.
-
They can also borrow these books
-
We need money to pay for printing the documents for
the school, including exams, worksheets, and booklets for the reading
competition
The prize
-
The amount of money for supply the prize for the
winner of competition or good student that they can go somewhere for travel
teachers, students, have a dinner for the prize someplace… and we need this
amount of money to prepare with some of the celebration of the school…
For this project we estimate that we need the
budget total around USD 3,400.

However,
that amount covers only the materials and programming for the library. Ideally,
we would be able to construct a library building independent from the
classrooms so that students and community members can read at their leisure and
not be restricted by class times. Also, the new building would allow us to
better secure the books and other materials.
In
order to construct this independent library, we need a total budget of $4000.
Here is the detailed budget breakdown:

Blueprints for the new library:
Summary
Our complete objective is to construct a new, secure
building where our new librarian can manage a large collection of reading materials
for our students and other community members as well as technological materials
such as a computer and projector. We believe that this project will instill a
love of reading in our community’s youth as well as provide a safe and
educational gathering point for community members.
In total:
The materials and
programming cost $3,400.
The new building
costs $4,000.
The full and
completed library project: $7,400
